England Women’s captain Catherine Spencer will be heading to Africa next week with the Tag Rugby Development Trust (TRDT) to coach underprivileged children in Uganda.

Spencer, who led England to a fourth successive RBS Women’s Six Nations title earlier this year, is an Ambassador the Tag Rugby Development Trust and from 25 June she will spend several weeks coaching primary school children in Jinja, Mbale and Entebbe.

The number 8 will also be getting teachers and local rugby volunteers into the programme to equip them with the necessary skills and resources to enable the children to keep playing tag rugby.

“I have been an ambassador for TRDT for just over a year, but I am very much looking forward to seeing first hand how the Trust works,” explained Spencer.

“I have no doubt that the time spent in Uganda will be hard work but I’m sure that this will be more than worth it when I see the smiles on the kids faces as they get the opportunity to run around having fun with a rugby ball.

“I am counting the days now until I get on the plane. I can’t wait to help to introduce the sport that I have gained so much from to people that, without TRDT, would be unlikely to ever experience rugby.”

The work carried out by the Trust in introducing thousands of children to rugby through the non-contact form of the Game was recognised in 2008 when they received the IRB Development Award at a ceremony in London.

The Trust is constantly striving to reach out to more children throughout the world and this year will see them also travel to Zambia and India with plans to extend their reach with link currently being built with the likes of Russia, Romania, Mexico, Botswana, Sri Lanka and the Bahamas.
