Australia 10-24 France

France ran out 24-10 winners in their much-anticipated IRB Women’s Rugby World Cup encounter with Australia at Ellerslie Rugby Park in Edmonton, Canada.

The game had started much as to be expected with the two sides going at each other straight from the kick off, eager to gain the early advantage.

Australia had strong runners in wing Ruan Sims and fly half Alana Thomas, but it was France who took the lead when some good work from captain Estelle Sartini created space for wing Catherine Devillers to score.

Things got worse for Australia two minutes later when Paige Butcher was sin-binned and while she was off the field Delphine Plantet scored a second try for France.

The Wallaroos looked a little shell-shocked but gradually began to show signs of the rugby that had seen them beat South Africa 68-12 on match day one. It was France though that went into half time with their tails up after Devillers broke away for her second try of the game, giving her team a 17-0 advantage.

The second half was a more even affair with defence dominating, some tremendous hits being put in by both teams who struggled to gain any real advantages. France again though managed to break the deadlock with a try by centre Dalila Boukerma after good work from the front five provided a platform to attack from.

However with 15 minutes to go Australia finally got some reward for their hard work as replacement Kim Wilson went over after some strong running by Tricia Brown and Butcher.

Tobie McGann kicked the conversion, but it was not to be the beginning of a comeback for Australia, the score remaining the same despite Sartini being sin-binned for the final minutes.

The result sets up an crucial final round of pool matches on Friday with France facing England and Australia needing to beat the USA to keep their semi-final hopes alive.

QUOTES

Australian coach Steve Hamson: “We didn’t work hard enough at the breakdown, we didn’t have our head in the game and we didn’t play what was in front of us. We need to get our heads more in the game.”

Australian captain Selena Worsley: “We let some off the ball infractions get to us and let the French team outmuscle us up front. We knew they would come at us hard, but our inexperience showed when reacting to situations.”

France coach Benoit Oszustowicz : “We will go away and look at the video of the England game earlier in the year, they will be very physical and we will need to defend like we did today as they are very quick and hard.”

France captain Estelle Sartini: “We defended very well, the Australians were very big physically and could have bullied us but we didn’t let that happen and we took the game to them.”
