Women's RWC consolation finals roundup

Australia defeated Ireland 18-14 in a fiercely contested game at Ellerslie Rugby Park to claim seventh place in the IRB Women's Rugby World Cup 2006.

Both teams produced a passionate and skilful display of rugby that was appreciated by a noisy crowd on a cold and wet day in Edmonton, Canada.

Earlier in the day, Spain prevailed over Samoa by 10-5 to secure ninth place in the standings. This was Spain's second close win over Samoa in the space of eight days.

Kazakhstan scored six tries as they beat South Africa 36-0 in the opening game at Ellerslie and claimed 11th place overall.

Finals day, 17 September

The Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton hosts the final three games of the Women's RWC 2006 tomorrow, 17 September.

First up at 12:00 midday local time, USA play Scotland for fifth place. That is followed at 14:30 by the third place play-off between France and Canada. The tournament reaches its climax at 17:00 with the IRB Women's Rugby World Cup final, between New Zealand and England.
